If the applicant has decided to establish residence in Italy, the Italian municipality (Comune) authorities are responsible for recognizing Italian citizenship.
Once registered in the registry of resident population, the foreign citizen may begin the procedure for recognition of Italian citizenship jure sanguinis (whose duration is established by law at a total of 180 days), by submitting the documentation specified in Circolare K.28.1/1991.
The applicant may not appoint a legal representative or another person acting on their behalf; the applicant must be physically present in Italy.
The request for issuance of the “Non-Renunciation” Certificate is made directly by the Italian municipality to the Consulate exclusively through PEC (certified electronic mail).
The Consulate’s response to the municipality (not to the applicant) is also sent exclusively through PEC, provided that the request was correctly submitted.
Applicants shall not contact the Consular Office directly regarding procedures handled by municipalities or by other Consular Offices, as this Consulate will not be notified of the applicationàs developments, beyond its own scope of responsibility.
