Law No. 74 of 23/05/2025 has reopened the period for reacquisition of Italian citizenship in favor of former citizens who:
- were born in Italy; or
- resided in Italy for at least two consecutive years,
and who lost Italian citizenship no later than 15/08/1992 pursuant to:
- Article 8, nos. 1 and 2; or
- Article 12 of Law No. 555 of 1912,
namely in cases involving:
- naturalization in a foreign country;
- renunciation of Italian citizenship following the involuntary acquisition of foreign citizenship;
- minor children cohabiting with a parent who lost citizenship.
The possibility of reacquisition does not apply to persons who renounced Italian citizenship (or lost it for another reason) starting from 16/08/1992 onward.
Timeframe for Submission
Declarations for reacquisition may be submitted between 01/07/2025 and 31/12/2027.
Required Documentation
A person applying for reacquisition must submit:
- A valid identity document issued by the authorities of the country of current citizenship;
- Birth certificate (if born abroad, the certificate must comply with the requirements for registration in Italy, including legalization and translation);
- For persons born abroad, a historical residence certificate issued by the relevant Italian municipality (Comune);
- Historical citizenship certificate;
- Documentation proving the cause and date of loss of citizenship. This documentation must demonstrate:
- the acquisition of foreign citizenship; and
- where applicable, the renunciation of Italian citizenship. Examples include: a naturalization certificate; or, if local regulations allow it, a birth certificate accompanied by certification of citizenship and the legal basis on which it was acquired.
Please note that documents issued by foreign authorities must be properly legalized and translated to Italian.
Fees
The applicant will be charged a €250 consular fee for declarations of reacquisition of Italian citizenship. The fee is to be paid to the Consular Office.
Personal Appearance Requirement
The declaration must be made in person by the applicant.
Effective Date of Reacquisition
Under Article 15 of Law No. 91/1992, the individual does not reacquire citizenship retroactively from birth, but from the day following the submission of the declaration.
