Death

The death of an Italian citizen occurring abroad must be registered in Italy.

In order to proceed with the registration, the following documentation must be submitted to the Consular Office:

  • the original death certificate issued by the competent Vital Records Office or hospital, translated into Italian by a Notary Public and provided with an Apostille issued by the competent Foreign Affairs Office (FAO省外事办) for the relevant Province (for further information, please refer to the page on translation and legalisation of documents);
  • documentation relating to the deceased person’s citizenship, such as an Italian ID, Italian passport, or certificate of Italian citizenship.

The Consular Office will then forward the documentation to the competent Italian Municipality.
