{"id":4892,"date":"2025-08-19T11:20:24","date_gmt":"2025-08-19T03:20:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/conscanton.esteri.it\/?page_id=4892"},"modified":"2026-05-22T15:23:51","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T07:23:51","slug":"reacquisition-of-italian-citizenship","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/conscanton.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/cittadinanza\/reacquisition-of-italian-citizenship\/","title":{"rendered":"Reacquisition of Italian Citizenship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Law No. 74 of 23\/05\/2025 has reopened the period for reacquisition of Italian citizenship in favor of <strong>former citizens who:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>were born in Italy; or<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>resided in Italy for at least two consecutive years,<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>and who lost Italian citizenship no later than 15\/08\/1992<\/strong> pursuant to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Article 8, nos. 1 and 2; or<\/li>\n<li>Article 12 of Law No. 555 of 1912,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>namely in cases involving:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>naturalization in a foreign country;<\/li>\n<li>renunciation of Italian citizenship following the involuntary acquisition of foreign citizenship;<\/li>\n<li>minor children cohabiting with a parent who lost citizenship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The possibility of reacquisition does not apply to persons who renounced Italian citizenship<\/strong> (or lost it for another reason) <strong>starting from 16\/08\/1992 onward.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Timeframe for Submission<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Declarations for reacquisition may be submitted <strong>between 01\/07\/2025 and 31\/12\/2027<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Required Documentation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A person applying for reacquisition must submit:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A valid identity document issued by the authorities of the country of current citizenship;<\/li>\n<li>Birth certificate (if born abroad, the certificate must comply with the requirements for registration in Italy, including legalization and translation);<\/li>\n<li>For persons born abroad, a historical residence certificate issued by the relevant Italian municipality (<em>Comune<\/em>);<\/li>\n<li>Historical citizenship certificate;<\/li>\n<li>Documentation proving the cause and date of loss of citizenship. This documentation must demonstrate:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>the acquisition of foreign citizenship; and<\/li>\n<li>where applicable, the renunciation of Italian citizenship. Examples include: a <strong>naturalization certificate<\/strong>; or, if local regulations allow it, a birth certificate accompanied by certification of citizenship and the legal basis on which it was acquired.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please note that documents issued by foreign authorities must be properly legalized and translated to Italian.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fees<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The applicant will be charged a \u20ac250 consular fee for declarations of reacquisition of Italian citizenship.
